SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Gordon Cressy
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Cressy is a great story teller and he has stories to tell.\nHe is a walking\, talking civics lesson. His work over the years has been a driving force in making Toronto what it is today – a city that takes top spots globally in livability rankings for diversity\, inclusivity\, and tolerance. Few know just how many lives he has had or the immense behind-the-scenes contributions he has made to the fabric of Canadian society. Through his stories\, Gordon’s life unfolds as a fish-out-of-water tale of a kid from North Toronto ending up in the Caribbean and transforming lives\, including his own. It is also a story about youth and growing up. It is a story about giving. But it is ultimately the story of the people who made Toronto the community it is today.\nGordon will take us on a sixty-year journey starting as a young CUSO volunteer with the YMCA in Trinidad\, followed by College on the south side of Chicago during the mid-1960s. He came back home to work in Toronto for 50 years\, and then went off with his wife for three years to set up the first ever YMCA in Tobago. There are stops along the way in China and Africa.\nGordon has been a swim instructor\, youth worker\, community organizer\, auctioneer\, teacher\, politician\, fund raiser and senior executive. He played a key role on two of Nelson Mandela’s visits to Toronto\, and founded Take Our Kids to Work and Canadian Tire’s Jump Start. He is also a keen senior competitive table tennis player.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: George Takach
DESCRIPTION:George Takach \nHis topic is Taiwan and Cold War 2.0: What Canadians Need to Know \nTaiwan is a very important country that Canadians don’t know enough about. Taiwan is a first-rate democracy with a vibrant civil society that adheres to the rule of law; it has a population accepting of religious\, gender and sexual diversity; it has a health care system that is the envy of Asia; it has a culture that fuses east and west; and it boasts 175 universities and colleges on an island the size of Vancouver Island. In terms of strategic geopolitics\, Taiwan is indispensable to the democracies because it produces over 90 % of the most advanced semiconductor chips used in the world\, including the critical chips that run the most powerful artificial intelligence software in civilian and military applications. Unfortunately for Taiwan and the rest of the world\, the autocracy in Beijing claims Taiwan to be part of China\, and Xi Jinping threatens to take over the small island by military force if necessary. \nIn his new book\, Inspired By Taiwan\, former lawyer and now author and geopolitical analyst George S. Takach discusses Taiwan and its outsized importance to geopolitics and countries all over the globe\, including Canada.  In his presentation\, using some images taken from the book\, George will highlight what Canadians need to know about this marvelous\, very relevant\, and dangerously situated country\, including the critical posture of the United States and President Trump towards Taiwan. \nGeorge makes the case that the world’s democracies should support Taiwan in order to keep the peace in Asia. George also argues that Canada has a lot to learn from Taiwan\, given Canada’s own challenges with a much larger neighbour that is threatening Canada’s own well-being. \nGeorge has undergrad and law degrees from the University of Toronto and an MA from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He practiced technology law for 35 + years as a partner at McCarthy Tétrault. During his legal career\, he was also an Adjunct Professor at Osgoode Hall \n Currently\, he is a Senior Fellow of the Bill Graham Centre for Contemporary History at the University of Toronto.

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker: Barbara Dickson
DESCRIPTION:Barbara Dickson\n\nMost Canadians are unaware that over 800\,000 Canadians\, mostly women\, worked on the home front to satisfy the need for munitions and other materiel during World War II. Scarborough\, Ajax\, Brownsburg\, Valleyfiel\,d and many other towns across Canada hosted these workers during this turning point of our history.\nBarbara Dickson’s book\, Bomb Girls: Trading Aprons for Ammo describing one such plant in Scarborough\, Ontario\, has remained in print since 2015. Her follow-on book\, Courage and Grit: The Legacy of Canada’s Bomb Girls\, scheduled for an October 2026 release\, chronicles almost 100 Bomb Girls’ personal stories that helped save and reshape our nation. \nIn her presentation\, Barbara delivers a dramatic and detailed review of their incredible contribution so long ago. What was it really like to work in a munitions factory? Did anyone die? What were working conditions like? How closely did bomb girls resemble “Rosie the Riveter”? Barbara draws from over 25 years of archival research and personal interviews to answer such questions. \nBarbara Dickson is a sought-after\, award-winning\, best-selling author\, historian\, public speaker\, and documentary film producer who has entertained and educated audiences for over 25 years. \nThrough her new Bomb Girls Legacy Foundation\, Barbara strives to educate Canadians about the phenomenal work carried out by women across the nation whose invaluable contributions helped win the Second World War. The foundation wants to establish a museum\, erect plaques\, teach schoolchildren\, and build a national monument in Ottawa\, all to commemorate Canada’s bomb girls.
