Frequently Asked Questions

What is Probus

PROBUS clubs were first formed, as an acronym for pro(fessional) and bus(iness), in the mid 1960’s. PROBUS Clubs worldwide are not service organizations and are non-sectarian and non-political, although members are often active volunteers in many community organizations. Clubs are formed to provide activities, social events and speakers to keep members up to date with trends and issues – both at the local and national level. Many members have formed smaller interest groups for hobbies such as sports, entertainment, bridge, the arts, restaurant dinners, wine groups, etc.

Who are the members?

At Mississauga Centre, our members are men and women who are retired or nearly retired from a wide range of occupations.  We encourage sponsorship from diverse and various religious, gender, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

What is the age range?

Our current members are 55+.

Does my spouse/partner need to join too?

Our PROBUS Mississauga Centre Club is, by definition, a mixed PROBUS club. Therefore, applicants who are married, or in a relationship, are required to join together.

Do I have to live in Mississauga

Most of our members live in Mississauga. However, many of our members live nearby in Etobicoke, Burlington and Oakville.

Is it compulsory to participate in all activities?

Absolutely not, nor is attendance at meetings compulsory. However, our Constitution does require members to attend monthly meetings at least three times per year. Exceptions are made, of course, for health or other serious reasons.

By way of background, as our club is full and other people would like to join, it is hoped that once you become a member that you will participate/volunteer in meetings and/or activities whenever you are able.

How much are the annual dues?

The cost is $75 per person each year.

How often are meetings and where are they held?

We hold our Regular Meetings on the second Thursday of each month. We usually meet at the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club and if not available, at Le Tréport Wedding & Convention Centre.

The program at our monthly meetings typically begins with some “gathering” time. The formal meeting begins at 9:30 and our time is split evenly between “club business” and the Speaker. An in between break time allows an opportunity to meet with other members and to sign up for upcoming social activities. Meetings usually wrap up by 11:45. Members may bring guests to the monthly meetings, provided that any one guest attends only once.

Does the Club have any other Activities?

Besides our monthly meetings, our PROBUS Club of Mississauga Centre is known for its friendly and active membership. We offer an abundance and variety of social activities that range from bowling to book clubs to golf outings to wine tasting. Our emphasis is on fun and fellowship!

Does the Club do fundraising activities?

No. Our PROBUS Club does not do any fundraising. This is not the purpose of PROBUS.

How do I proceed if I am considering becoming a member of PROBUS Club of Mississauga Centre?

Our membership is currently full. New members are generally welcomed as couples and are sponsored by existing members. We normally accept 6-8 new couples annually.

When does the Club accept new members?

We renew our membership yearly in October but welcome new members as vacancies occur.

I understand that PROBUS Club of Mississauga Centre is currently full. Are there any other PROBUS Clubs in the area that I could join?

There are several other PROBUS Clubs in the area – some are mixed, others are Men’s or Ladies’ clubs. You can find the contact information for any of these clubs by going online to PROBUS Canada at https://www.probus.org/welcome.html.
