Visitors to the reactor can observe medical isotope production, neutron research facilities, and the reactor core’s stunning “blue glow” first-hand.
The McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) is a 5 MW open-pool research reactor and Canada’s only major neutron source. MNR supports a wide range of neutron-based science and is also a global leader in medical isotope research, development, and production.
Presently, MNR is the world’s leading producer of the medical isotope iodine-125, which is used to treat a variety of cancers. MNR is also the only North American producer of a new holmium-166-based medical device used to treat liver cancer.
